Please connect the dots of your childhood that make you the person you are.
I spent my childhood with my parents and my grandmother who came to India during partition. It is well known that my grandfather was shot dead at the time of partition when my father was six months old.
This meant that my grandmother was a young widow who waded through the struggles of life and became a teacher. My childhood is full of interactions with my grandmother which has shaped me as a human being.
Having a grandmother who strongly believed that she could get happiness by giving happiness really shaped me. She would cook and offer food to needy people while going to school. Her compassion has been the greatest source of inspiration for me.
My father, an engineer my profession is a replica of my grandmother and his words have always been guiding light of my life. My mother is the strongest and the most positive person I know.
There are a number of lessons I have learnt from her, the most important ones being ‘See the good in others’ and ‘Positivity is contagious – A positive mind leads to a Positive Life ‘.
How has your formal education shaped your life?
I did my schooling from Holy child Auxilium and Modern School, Delhi. Though I went to USA for my graduation, I returned after a year when my Father was diagnosed with a heart ailment.
From here I pursued B.Tech from Delhi University and finished my MBA from MDI Gurgaon in 2006. Going forward I majored in Finance and interned in strategy with a Nano Technology Firm, NANON at Copenhagen, Denmark.
This was an enriching experience and I felt a strong sense of achievement when I got a personal recommendation letter from CEO of Nannon.
How has your journey as a Professional and an Entrepreneur been? How do your balance your social work with your new venture when you are a young mom too?
I have had a successful corporate stint in USA before I moved back to India in late 2015. My parents and I relocated to USA in 2007. At that time I was working with my dream company Merrill Lynch.
In USA, I started my career with GM Asset Management which is the Largest Corporate Pension Plan in USA. It was my dream to be in equity investments so I started working towards it and successfully completed the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst).
I then moved on to become the youngest portfolio manager and successfully managed a $250 million fund. At this time I was also selected for a leadership program at Harvard where I was the youngest in the batch.
These five years were very gratifying as I scaled the heights of corporate ladder. But somewhere along the way, I realised that my calling was to do build something from scratch which has a huge impact in the day to day lives of people.
The idea of Baby Destination was born in 2015 , based on our personal experience. As a parents, both Tamanna and Tarun went through and still continue to go through lots of challenges when it comes to making decisions around products and services to get for their son. Hence we decided to solve this problem of discovery through a technology platform where moms and experts can connect with each other to discover personalized recommendations.
Our research into the market segments, focus groups discussions and growth prospects led us to believe that both need and opportunity is bigger in India. Hence we decided to relocate to India end of 2015 to pursue our dreams in building the most trusted parenting platform.
We started with building a community on social channels and in less than 3 months have we have 14,000+ engaged moms on Facebook and 8000+ moms on our platform.
Tarun and Tamanna also founded Doctors for you- USA in late 2013 with a dream to help underprivileged children suffering from congenital heart diseases. We visited India in 2014 and met amazing like-minded people like Rajat Jain and Divya Nangia who are the pillars of DFY USA.
We have partnered up with G.B. Pant Hospital, Delhi to take care referrals and children get operated across the best hospitals in Delhi at a highly subsidised cost. I would like to specially mention Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon as they have been supporting us with the lowest cost surgeries and care for children since end of last year.
Our first child was operated in Jan 2015 and till date we have helped over 75 children.
“Technology can enable women to find their true voice. Technology, if used for self-growth, can offer avenues to women which were unavailable earlier”. Your comments.
Baby Destination is a live example of Technology as an enabler for so many young mothers and pregnant women who are anxious and curious to excel as parents. It wasn’t possible for us to create an impactful connecting platform without technology.
Women can share their experiences, give and receive help within minutes through technological support. Mothers blog about their experiences and advice other women on varied needs like Breast-feeding, Home Remedies, Schooling Queries which offer immediate support.
How has your motherhood contributed to you as an individual and as a woman who loves her work? Share your dilemmas and dreams.
My motherhood gave me an impetus to work towards children. When we first started our non-profit, my son was 9 months old and when we started working on Baby Destination he was 2 years old.
The arrival of my son led to daily dilemmas, curiosities and anxiety which made me to think about the need of a platform where parenting can be made better and easier.
Nothing can give more satisfaction than a smile on the faces of parents once their child gets operated. Each successful operation gives us more hope and drives us to work harder so that we could help more under-privileged children.
Talk about three people in your life who have had the most profound influence on you.
All these three people are from my family and they have had a profound influence on me and have made me the person that I am.
My Grandmother has influenced me the most and I think I have inherited her giving nature.
Dad is a man of few words with a rare persona.
My Mom is one of the strongest human beings I have ever come across. Because of her spirituality and positivity, she could fight Breast Cancer; everyday she gives me the strength to become a fighter.
Your philosophy of life in a sentence.
It is all about the journey, not the end point. I firmly believe that end result has no meaning if the journey doesn’t give any lesson.
Tell us about your future plans.
We are very passionate about uniting moms and helping them make quality parenting decisions. We are working hard towards growing Baby Destination so it has become the most trusted parenting platform in India.
At DFY-USA, we are working towards increasing the impact, by partnering with right people and organisations so that we could help more lives. We want to build a crowd funding app where we can connect people who need help with people who can give.
What would you like to convey to those moms who have dreams and ideas but they feel bogged down by family and social responsibilities.
The word mom stands for Master Of Multitasking and that comes from the infinite strength within you. The birth of a mother is as sacred as the birth of a child.
Think positive and start acting towards your calling whether it is of being a super homemaker, rising the corporate ladder or building something from scratch.
